⁠Environmental Conservation

The DRC’s natural heritage, with its exceptional biodiversity and vast forests, which are considered a crucial carbon sink, plays an essential role in the global ecological balance and in regulating the planet’s climate. Recognizing the importance of preserving these resources for future generations, the PHC Foundation implements initiatives to protect endangered species, conserve ecosystems, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Through this program, two flagship projects contribute to environmental preservation while promoting sustainable development that benefits local communities.

  • Protecting Bonobos from Wildlife Crime in Their Habitat

    Bonobos are the primates genetically closest to humans. They are found only in the DRC, in the region between the Congo River and the Kasai River. This species is listed as endangered. Their survival is seriously threatened by poachers who capture them for food or to sell. Carried out through the Center for Forestry and Ecology Research (CREF), a national research institution mandated to conduct research on bonobos, this project will protect bonobos by reducing human pressure on these primates and their natural habitat, while offering development alternatives to communities living in the same environment as the bonobos.

  • Green Growth and Sustainable Community Development

    By promoting community participation in the energy transition and environmental conservation, the PHC Foundation contributes to the sustainable improvement of their living conditions and the strengthening of their economic resilience. We work toward inclusive green growth by placing local communities at the heart of sustainable development initiatives. Through our support, we strengthen communities’ capacity to better manage their natural resources and facilitate access to forest property rights in accordance with Congolese law, and support the development of revenue-generating mechanisms such as carbon credits.
