History of the PHC Foundation
La Fondation PHC a été créée par la société Plantations et Huileries du Congo (PHC) The PHC Foundation was established by Plantations et Huileries du Congo (PHC) to amplify the social impact that the company traditionally generates in rural areas of the DRC. PHC is not only the largest palm oil producer in the DRC, but also the country's largest private healthcare provider; it operates four hospitals with a total of 460 beds and provides quality care free of charge or at heavily subsidized costs to over 150,000 people in Lokutu (Tshopo Province), Yaligimba (Mongala Province), and Boteka (Équateur Province). PHC also provides technical assistance to over 2,400 farmers, organized into 90 Agricultural Producer Organizations (APOs), to improve their food security and increase their incomes. In addition to all of the above, PHC builds and rehabilitates schools to provide children in rural areas with a comfortable environment and a suitable learning setting.
In November 2020, the New York-based African investment fund, Kuramo Capital Management , acquired a majority stake in PHC, bringing a new spirit, a new vision of shared prosperity, and an entirely Congolese management team. At a PHC strategy development workshop held in Zongo, Kongo Central Province, in April 2021, it was decided to create a non-profit foundation to amplify the positive social impact PHC was already having on the communities surrounding its infrastructure. The creation of the PHC Foundation was officially announced on September 5, 2023, International Day of Charity, by PHC's CEO. An independent board of directors, separate from that of the company, was established and held its first meeting on November 30, 2023. Professor Mpoko Bokanga was appointed the first executive director of the PHC Foundation on February 8, 2024. The PHC Foundation's activities began in April 2024.
